What a bummer about the other Snowball fight game. Your game sounds pretty solid, I would hate to hear that you are shelving it. I know what you mean about not wanting to re-theme it, it’s hard when you have built a game around a specific theme then suddenly might have to change it for one reason or another. I’m going through that myself right now.
I hope it works out for you.
One easy retheme you could do for snowball fight would be to make it a water balloon fight. Maybe it’s not what you had in mind, but it’d be different.
With regard to the demon game pitch, most of my friends really dislike the lottery win of Killer Bunnies. Yours would be better in that there are multiple rounds, each based on probability, but it might still be a negative for some people.
Still catching up on the podcast so apologies if this has already moved on. Actually do you read comments to ‘old’ episodes?
Anyway, rather than retheme, expend the theme. Call it “Penguin Snowball Fight” and have anthropomorphised penguins fighting (nothing else to do at the south pole!) Even more family friendly and cartoon penguin art for the cards may be cheaper too.
(If you don’t like penguins then perhaps polar bears, or even Eskimos)
